The China Iron and Steel Association (CISA), backed by the state, criticized the United States on Thursday for politicizing steel trade by implementing additional tariffs on certain Chinese steel products.
President Joe Biden announced on Tuesday a series of significant tariff hikes on various Chinese imports, including certain steel and aluminum products.
CISA stated on its WeChat account that the proportion of China's steel exports to the U.S. is minimal, as is the share of U.S. steel imports from China. They argued that Biden's actions have disrupted the global steel trade order and are detrimental to the healthy growth of the global steel industry.
Highlighting China's focus on meeting domestic demand and advancing technology and sustainability in the steel sector, CISA emphasized its commitment to green transformation.
Echoing similar sentiments, the China Nonferrous Metals Industry Association conveyed a comparable message on Wednesday.
In response to the tariff increases, China's Ministry of Commerce pledged on Tuesday to take decisive measures to safeguard its rights and interests.
