Microsoft (MSFT.O) has revealed its commitment to supporting the advancement of voice-based generative artificial intelligence (AI) applications through a collaboration with the Indian startup Sarvam AI.
This partnership was officially announced during the three-day visit of CEO Satya Nadella, as the tech giant aims to broaden the adoption of its products among consumers in India, which is currently the fastest-growing major economy.
As part of this collaboration, Microsoft will facilitate Sarvam AI in building genAI models specifically designed for Indic languages and contextual applications. The startup, known for its founders' earlier work on AI models at the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras-based research group AI4Bharat, will leverage Microsoft's cloud services, including Azure OpenAI Service, to develop its solutions.
Microsoft emphasized that this initiative aligns with its ongoing efforts to encourage the widespread use of AI technologies.
During his visit, CEO Satya Nadella had previously announced an ambitious initiative aiming to provide AI skilling opportunities to 2 million Indians by the year 2025. This underscores Microsoft's commitment to fostering technological education and innovation in India.
Sarvam AI, in its pursuit of developing AI solutions, has successfully secured $41 million in a series A funding round from prominent investors such as Lightspeed Venture Partners, Peak XV Partners, and Khosla Ventures.
The funding will support the startup's endeavors in advancing AI applications, particularly those tailored for the linguistic and contextual nuances of the Indian market.
